The rest of the article is available in an album located here: http://picasaweb.google.com/theislandartistOne of my favorite houses that I designed and built more then a decade ago. The client had an original concept - a pagoda to take advantage of the view from upper Capt. Cook and because he just liked the shape of it - and then pretty much stepped aside and let me design what I thought it should be. He was kind of like a recluse and invited no one over and let the trees hide it from view - and hide some of my best work! Recently it was purchased by some people who liked people and it came to the attention of West Hawaii Today. The Mystery House - funny. The structural requirements were elegantly met. With each floor getting smaller then the floor below it, it was necessary to add a series of heavy wood, naturally finished trusses that supported each other and the floors above by using outside bearing walls and a fabricated spaced column in the middle of the floor made out of (4) spaced 6x6's.
Nice to see it in the open and thanks West Hawaii Today for the recognition.

Well, my 2nd try. (I lost my 1st post to you)
ReplyDeleteNow, what was I saying... You won't believe this...when we were looking for another house, I saw the "Pagoda House" in Homes & Land. It had been on the mkt. for a long time. Even though I'm not a fan of Asian arch., I was somehow drawn to the "Pagoda". I believe it represented peacefulness which I so desire. I must have saved several pix of it and would
look at them intermittently. I was saddened that it finally sold. Guess I thought, by some miracle, the house would find me. Jim thought it was too far from work.
We're still in the Kaiminani house. The horrific traffic noise doesn't seem to irritate Jim at all but it robs me of my on-going healing, meditation, crafting, etc. efforts. Dbl-pane windows are a laugh. On-going conversation...."well maybe we can enclose the 3 lanai's,carport, etc". An architect suggested a row of Arecas in front. They don't cut it!
Would love to attend your 4pm on fri. Sounds like fun. My wknd is packed:4/17 1pm Kona Stories reading, 3pm appt.,4/18 4p KMS Concert. Gotta monitor my energy level. My weight is too low. Need to eat more! What a concept, huh?
Yes, pls. put me on the mailing list.
Really want to watch you paint. Visited a gallery on Maui in Lahaina - no Richard there? Keep up your beautiful work.
Aloha, Carolyn Ann Kanehelani Lewellen :-)
